What is ECU Remapping /Remap

ECU Remapping / Remap or as it is sometimes called Chip Tuning is the process of changing the operational parameters of the engines Electronic Control Unit (ECU). ECU Remapping normally involves changing the ecu parameters to maximise the performance as requested by the client.

Manufacturers set the ecu parameters to de-tune the performance. They do this to take account of such as: Engines that use sub standard fuels; owners who do not carry out engine servicing at the recommended intervals. ECU Remapping  adjusts these parameters to regain the performance. More than just regaining de-tuned performance custom ECU Remapping / Remap can tailor the engines performance to your specific requirements: Better fuel economy / More Miles Per Gallon (MPG), increased acceleration, more power etc.

Chip Tuning

Chip Tuning is a term that is often used in place of ECU Remapping / Remap, but in reality is normally reserved for the more traditional engine performance tuning systems that concentrate on acceleration, top speed etc.

More Engine Power

In almost every instance an ECU Remap / Chip Tuning will increase both the power & torque of your engine, how this extra power and torque is manipulated will dictate the type of ECU Remap: Economy; Driving Performance, provided.

Our technician will discuss the specific performance needs of the client and adjust the remapping parameters accordingly. One client may want to have their cat tuned for maximum top speed, another may want maximum acceleration, optionally at varying RPM.

Some clients may request more engine power for towing such as a caravan or a boat trailer. In such cases our technician will concentrate on moving the engines torque curve so as to produce more torque at a lower RPM. This will result in more torque being delivered at lower RPM thereby allowing the client to change into a higher gear at lower engine rev's.

Fuel Economy

Traditionally people think of tuning their car to get better acceleration, top speed etc. However given the price of petrol & diesel more people are looking to improve their fuel economy (MPG) via an ECU Remap. ECU Remapping an engine generally increases engine power (BPH) & engine torque (Nm). With this extra engine power you will not have to press your accelerator as far to reach your normal driving speed, thereby reducing the amount of fuel that you use. If you have asked for what we call an ECO Tune, the technician will further modify the ECU parameters to enhance the fuel economy of the engine as opposed to biasing the ECU parameters in favour of top speed and acceleration etc.
